What is Veterinary Physiotherapy, and how could it benefit your pet?
When people hear the word physiotherapy, they often think of helping people recover after an injury or surgery. But did you know that physiotherapy can also play a vital role in improving your pet’s health, comfort, and quality of life?
Whether your pet is recovering from an operation, managing arthritis, or simply slowing down with age, veterinary physiotherapy can help them move more comfortably, build strength, and enjoy a better quality of life.
What is Veterinary Physiotherapy?
Veterinary physiotherapy works very similarly to the way it does for humans. It is a specialised treatment that focuses on restoring movement, reducing pain, and improving your pet’s physical function through movement and exercise. Physiotherapy treatment may include hands-on therapies, therapeutic exercises, massage, stretching, and the use of advanced rehabilitation equipment to support recovery and mobility. We tailor our approach specifically to every pet’s individual needs, also utilising other therapies such as therapeutic laser and electrotherapies as required.
Our veterinary physiotherapist, Cindy, who is also one of our Senior Registered Veterinary Nurses, works alongside your veterinary team to create an individual rehabilitation plan. This ensures complete continuity of care from the team you have come to know and trust.
The aim isn’t just to treat an injury; it’s to help your pet regain confidence, improve their movement, and get back to doing the things they love.
Which pets can benefit?
Physiotherapy isn’t only for pets recovering from surgery. It can benefit animals of all ages and activity levels.
Your pet may benefit if they:
- Are recovering from orthopaedic or spinal surgery.
- Have arthritis or other joint conditions.
- Have suffered a muscle, tendon, or ligament injury.
- Are recovering from trauma or illness.
- Show signs of stiffness, limping, or reduced mobility.
- Have neurological conditions affecting movement.
- Are older and finding it harder to stay active.
- Are sporting or working dogs who need support to maintain peak performance.
Many owners notice subtle changes before they become major problems, such as reluctance to jump into the car, slowing down on walks, or difficulty getting up after resting. Early intervention can often make a significant difference.
As the weather begins to cool down over the next few months (which seems a stark change to the numerous heatwaves!), many pet owners seek physiotherapy for their pets as part of their ongoing treatment programme for conditions such as arthritis, which can become worse in colder weather.
How does physiotherapy help?
Every rehabilitation programme is tailored to the individual pet, but the goals are often the same:
- Reduce pain and inflammation.
- Improve joint mobility and flexibility.
- Increase muscle strength.
- Restore balance and coordination.
- Improve overall fitness and endurance.
- Speed up recovery after surgery or injury.
- Help pets remain active and comfortable for longer.
By improving movement and reducing discomfort, physiotherapy can enhance both physical health and emotional wellbeing, allowing pets to enjoy a happier, more active life.

More than physiotherapy
As we previously mentioned, at Wolfe Vets, we believe rehabilitation works best when different therapies are combined to suit each individual patient.
Alongside physiotherapy, we regularly use therapeutic laser therapy to help reduce pain and inflammation while encouraging tissue healing. Laser therapy is non-invasive, well tolerated by most pets, and can be an excellent addition to rehabilitation programmes.
We also offer neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), a treatment that uses gentle electrical impulses to stimulate muscles. NMES can be particularly beneficial for pets recovering from surgery, those with muscle weakness, or patients who are unable to exercise normally while they heal. It helps maintain muscle mass, improve strength, and support recovery during rehabilitation. With training and support from Cindy, this is also a well-tolerated treatment, which can be used in the comfort of your home.
By combining these therapies where appropriate, we can provide a comprehensive rehabilitation programme designed to maximise your pet’s comfort and recovery.
When should you seek advice?
Our team will always discuss physiotherapy with you during a consultation if we feel it will be of benefit to your pet. However, if you’ve noticed your pet becoming less active, struggling with mobility, or recovering from an injury or operation, physiotherapy could make a real difference.
The sooner problems are identified, the sooner we can help improve mobility, reduce discomfort, and support long-term health.
Our team will be happy to assess your pet and advise whether physiotherapy or rehabilitation treatments could benefit them.
Did you know?
Veterinary physiotherapy is covered by many pet insurance policies, particularly comprehensive or lifetime plans! Of course, you will need to check the coverage and terms & conditions of your individual policy, but your pet could be benefiting from this gentle treatment with the cost covered by your insurance company.
Supporting your pet every step of the way
